Pedram has created a wonderful resource for those looking to improve their lives through practicing mindfulness.The Art of Stopping Time brings together the most up-to-date and helpful research and information available on practicing mindfulness in today's busy world. The mindfulness techniques inside of this book have worked really well for me and I recommend them to anyone looking for inner peace, relaxation, serenity and freedom.I really enjoyed how Pedram broke out a plan into covering 100 days. Examples of days covered include- Gratitude- Desk Time- Anxious Time- Dream Time- Digesting Emotions- Doing Nothing- Deceleration Time- Podcasts and Audiobooks- Time Audit- Setting Rituals- Social Media Day Off- The Rings of a Tree- EtcThis book is packed full of ideas and suggestions that anyone and everyone can benefit from.This book is sitting in my tea area and it's a great reminder to slow down and smell the roses every once in awhile.
Over the last 10 years, I feel like there is a big shift happening. People have seemingly become busier than ever, and yet, most people feel like they are not very productive.We have more distractions competing for our time and attention than ever before, and it has become harder to actually focus and get stuff done. Yet, we simultaneously have more demands on us to get stuff done than ever before.Sound familiar? It does for me at least. As an entrepreneur, I often feel like I need to clone myself (ideally a few times) to be able to actually handle everything I need to do.It's easy to feel overwhelmed. And it's all too easy to procrastinate and just not manage time effectively.This book is the best thing I've read on the subject of time management.In just a few days of practicing a handful of techniques from this book, I have already dramatically increased my productivity. (And that translates into feeling a lot better about myself and my day, at the end of the day).The email chunking technique alone has made a huge difference for me, and has eliminated the constant distraction of incoming emails.Moreover, there is an interesting shift happening... Instead of EVERY moment of the day feeling busy and like I have demands on me, I am able to shift in and out of "work mode." Pedram Shojai’s newest book, The Art of Stopping Time, is a treasure trove of suggestions for reclaiming control of your time while moving through life more consciously. The 100 daily exercises – or gongs as Shojai calls them – includes practices from time audits (exactly like it sounds) to time with the stars. (the celestial variety, not Hollywood.) I jumped at the opportunity to participate in a test panel that utilized 50 of the gongs and witnessed firsthand how valuable these daily practices can be. When I re-evaluated my priorities (Day 1 – assembling your life garden) and started to “chunk time†(Day 13) I found that my productivity in creative writing skyrocketed. To my delight, it’s still going strong. The Art of Stopping Time is a treat to read - each gong is only two, shortish pages or less and the author’s tone is conversational; soothing. There’s no fluff, yet it’s thought-provoking and no-nonsense. As with all personal development, it does require action and commitment. :) I loved the book – five stars, highly recommended. It’s the one I’m giving for Christmas this year.
I love how this book is laid out in bite sized chunks per day – it immediately feels relaxing and very do-able even though there are 100 days of gongs! I’ve skimmed through the book and am committing to reading and implementing a new practice every single day and solidifying the practices I am already doing with some of the new perspectives and tips from Pedram.I was hooked on day 1 as soon as I started reading the Life Garden metaphor to help us figure out how much time and energy we have to commit to things – if we add something we take away from something else. You don’t overcommit and best of all you don’t stress about the things you don’t get done.It seems I’m doing well on some of the gong practices like gratitude, time in the sun and nature but I have room for improvement on the chunk time, doing nothing and listening to noise (and many more interesting looking gongs). So many simple and yet powerful reminders!I’ll be recommending this book to my community of anxious and stressed women so we can all benefit from the art of stopping time!
This is another life-impacting guide from Pedram Shojai. Urban Monk was a game-changer for me, one of the best overall health and wellness books I'd ever read - so it was a no-brainer to check this one out. I'm definitely not disappointed! He has an incredible ability to take sometimes over-complicated concepts and turn them into easy, practical instructions and recommendations to live a more balanced, healthy life. Mindfulness practices don't have to be intimidating or complex - simplicity wins the day, and Dr. Shojai understands the importance (especially in today's fast-paced world) of making sure his recommendations are things people can actually implement easily into their lives!
